Why Journaling?
Journaling can be fun, rewarding and it can help us to learn to live "more" in the moment. We must slow down to truly “see.” By focusing on the moment, we give ourselves time to breathe. Journals can create a record of our everyday experiences, capture a special occasion like a trip abroad, a new baby, grandchild, or pet. Journaling can also help us to work through emotionally charged situations such as a chronic illness or divorce. Journals are wonderful places to explore ideas and thoughts.
Why Artful Journaling?
Artful Journaling is simply a visual record rather than just writing. We sketch an experience rather than just describe it with words. Artful Journaling can be words combined with art, words as art, or art in place of words!
Artful Journaling helps us to:
-
• Develop and improve our ability to observe
-
• Develop our creativity
-
• Develop our art skills
What Makes For A Successful Journaler?
Is it great art skills? No! A way with words? No! A highly creative person? No!
A successful journaler is someone with a willingness to let go of the pursuit of perfection, an openness to possibilities, and a strong desire to explore, play, experiment, and learn!
Because journaling is a broad subject with many fun facets, Artful Journaling will be presented in two classes over the summer: the first class will focus on the basics and is Artful Journaling: Foundations and the second class, Artful Journaling: Explorations, will be about building on and expanding the basics.

Artful Journaling: Foundations
Anyone can journal, and yes, anyone can artfully journal! Having art skills or being an “artist” is not a prerequisite to Artful Journaling: Foundations! This class will cover the basics needed to get started journaling including the basics of using watercolors. There will be exercises to help you begin journaling from the very first class!
Classes will be structured around 2 assignments and video demos each week covering:
-
•choosing a journal and basic mark-making materials
-
•exercises that teach you how to observe, draw and paint with watercolors
-
•making time to journal, overcoming fears, and giving up the pursuit of perfection
-
•basic page and design elements
-
•loosening up and having fun!
Assignments will be spread out over each week. Video demos* are provided so that you can “see” the techniques used. The demos are available for the duration of the class and you can watch them as many times as you wish.
*Whereas we will explore various art supplies and mark-making materials, watercolors will be the primary method demonstrated in the videos.
Creative prompts are given each week to help you get going and build momentum (and fill pages) in your journal!
Gentle support and suggestions for growth will be given for each piece of art posted in a secure private environment with feedback provided by other “journalers” as well. Everyone will have email access for any questions that come up during class.
Students who enroll in this class should have the following:
