Welcome.html

Come play in the sand and surf with me, Laure Ferlita, on
“An Imaginary Visit
To The Beach!”
Enjoying the sunshine, listening to the waves roll on to shore, shell hunting, shorebirds to watch, flora and fauna to study–these are just a few of the tempting things we’ll find at the beach to capture in our sketchbooks amid the warm, balmy breezes coming in off the Gulf of Mexico.
We’ll learn to “see” new textures, capture bright sunlight, focus on the little things that make a beach visit so much fun as well as how to create the ever changing colors of water and sand. We’ll search in the mangroves, along the shore, and in the water to find beach gems easily overlooked! The flexibility to add in your own treasures from the beach will make this a “visit” to remember! You’ll learn how to:

capture color, detail and texture convincingly

create an intimate (macro) view of the beach’s beauty

simplify a scene down to its essence

 eliminate unnecessary detail

and best of all you’ll have an extraordinary sketchbook commemorating the
captivating beauty of our beach visit, too quickly gone!

Our focus will be a mix of intimate (macro) images as well as larger scenes, giving time and attention to recreating our “emotional connections” with our beach trip. We’ll create and use a special sketchbook to capture these treasures. One that can be easily tucked into a bag, and later, shared with friends and family.

Our trip to the beach will last 5 weeks with 2 assignments each week. Video demos and techniques will be provided as well as creative writing prompts.

Gentle critiques and suggestions will be given in a secure environment with feedback from our fellow “travelers” as well. Everyone will have email access for any questions that may come up during our “visit.”

“...and thoughtful lessons for students with all levels of sketching experience!

I knew I was making progress with my class assignments, but I wondered if I could transfer those skills to my own sketching in public and/or at home, and was hesitant to try.  It’s working!

I am thrilled, that with a bit of encouragement from you, I walked down the block and sketched a cute little beach bungalow.  A little bit of history here…I’ve tried sketching this same house at least four times over the past three years, and had “instant throwaway” results.  Laure, please keep teaching the 4 e’s…they are like gold to creating sketches. Thanks again.” — Pat O., student
