Come and celebrate Earth Day 2021 with this “heart-felt” design of our planet! Earth deserves some love from all of us because there is no Plan(et) B if we damage this one beyond repair. Earth Day is on Thursday, April 22nd so I’ve set the class for the weekend before so you can make cards to send out to friends or a poster or simply a page in your journal.
For this project, you’ll receive a short step-by-step instruction sheet along with the design and lettering so all you have to do is trace it onto the paper and you’re ready to paint. The project only takes two paint colors—three if you’re adventurous! The lettering can be completed with paint, markers or watercolor pencils.
The other thing I changed up with this piece is that I painted the heart on hot-press watercolor paper because I wanted to get lots of mixing and mingling between my pigments. If you’re not comfortable working on hot-press paper, cold-press watercolor paper will also work just fine!
Other important things to know:
Do I Have To Know How To Draw?
No, you do not. You will be provided with step-by-step instructions along with the design and lettering to trace onto your paper.
Do I Need To Know How To Paint?
You do need some experience with watercolors, washes, etc. to successfully take this class, but beginners with adventurous and courageous attitudes are always most welcome!
Do I Have To Have Your Exact Supply List?
No, you don’t. I encourage you to use what you already have with the exception of specific requirements. Your results will vary from mine regardlesss of whether you’re using the exact same pigments as we all paint differently.
When Will Class Be Held?
Class will be held live and online on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. EDST and will last approximately one hour (but probably longer as I will try to answer as many questions as I can).
Can I Access The Class Later?
No, this will be a LIVE class ONLY. A recording of the class will NOT be posted.
How Long Will I Have The Materials?
You will have the class instructions handout (in pdf form) forever as they will be emailed to you.
Can I Get A Refund For This Class?
Unfortunately, that’s not possible once access to the class materials has been given.

Recommended Supply List
5.5” x 5.5” piece of watercolor paper (https://amzn.to/2Pe6P4w),** hot or cold press OR a 5″ x 7” card appropriate for watercolor (https://amzn.to/2XGEQM8)**
#2 Pencil or mechanical pencil**
White Eraser
Kneaded Eraser**
#4 or 6 round brush (https://amzn.to/39fMgu5) OR a large waterbrush
Watercolors – Daniel Smith Hansa Yellow Medium** (https://amzn.to/3iJAQTf) and Phthalo Blue, Green Shade** (https://amzn.to/3tDUF3y) and for the more adventurous folks—Holbein Peacock Blue (https://amzn.to/38Xqw7I)
IMPORTANT: If you do not have these pigments and want to substitute, I highly recommend you test the yellows and blues you have mixed together on a scrap of paper to make sure you will like the combination. Some of the yellow and blue mixes I tried were dull and boring.
Facial Tissues
Clean scrap paper (to rest your hand on)
Paper Towels
**Be sure to have the supplies marked with a double asterisk as they will be key to the success of the project.
Optional Supplies
Graphite transfer paper (https://amzn.to/2WCYVCq) – If you purchase transfer paper, please make sure it is Wax Free). See further comments below.
Porcelain Palette with small wells (https://amzn.to/3czcKZF) – I typically work straight from the wells on my palette, but this becomes problematic when working with yellow because of how easily it becomes polluted, especially when mixed with a phthalo or another highly-staining color. For this reason, I tend to use a small palette so I don’t ruin my yellow on my main palette. This small palette has 12 very small wells which makes it perfect for this time of work. Whether this palette or another, I highly recommend having a second palette to work from so as to keep your colors as clean as possible.
#2 round watercolor brush (https://amzn.to/39fMgu5) for the lettering if you will be painting your letters OR Watercolor Pencils in yellow, blue and green that coordinate with the colors on your palette OR markers in the same colors (they can be waterproof or non-waterproof)
Blow dryer
Transfer Papers
If you purchase graphite transfer paper please be sure it is Wax Free.
To transfer your project without graphite transfer paper, you can use a window or light box. You can also scribble graphite on the back of the paper to transfer the design.
