Come and join me, Laure, to learn to create a quilted jack-o’-lantern square in watercolor! This class features using an underpainting (or under-layer) to give the piece more dimension and depth. Texture is used to create interest in the dark background so it doesn’t read as a black hole or dull.
Do you have a hard time making blacks look and read as “real” and lively instead of like dull, dark holes?
Do you have a difficult time “reading values“?
Do you struggle to get a full range of values (lights, darks and mid-tones) in your paintings?
This class is a great way to learn about using values to get really dark darks, learn to get a full range of values and to recognize the different values in your work. I won’t say it’s stress-free (because that is up to you), but I can say it is a great way to learn about values and have fun!
This class will be hosted on the Zoom platform with an opportunity for you to ask questions in real time. Zoom is a free tool and you only need your computer to access it. You may need to download the Zoom app to get the most out of the tool.
Once you are registered, I will send out information on your homework and what steps you will need to complete ahead of time to be ready for class!
P.S. In full disclosure, the design above is not an actual quilt square but instead, it is an artistic interpretation of a quilt square. If you are seeking a jack-o’-lantern pattern for the purposes of creating a quilt, I suggest doing an internet search.

Recommended Supply List
Cold press watercolor paper, 140 lb. paper at least one inch larger than your design (either 8 inches or 10 inches in overall size)
Graphite pencil
Kneaded eraser
White Eraser or SumoGrip* Eraser (https://amzn.to/3fJRgcY) – It’s black so don’t let that fool you!
Ruler
Watercolor pigments I used (Most are Daniel Smith):
Hansa Yellow Medium (https://amzn.to/3iJAQTf); Pyrrol Orange (https://amzn.to/3anVyVz); Perylene Red (https://amzn.to/31QmDNb); Quinacridone Violet (https://amzn.to/33Z03F4); Indanthrone Blue (https://amzn.to/33Sgkd9); Carbazole Violet (https://amzn.to/2Y0ZU01); Burnt Umber (https://amzn.to/2DPOqFH) and M. Graham’s Neutral Tint (https://amzn.to/3craPpv) – I specifically prefer M. Graham’s neutral tint over a true black pigment or other neutral tints because the mix is made from green and violet pigments that mixes well with other pigments without deadening or dulling them.
Please Note: Carbazole Violet (https://amzn.to/2Y0ZU01) is an integral key to the success of this project. This violet is a highly-staining violet and will not lift once dry. Other violets are not usually staining and will lift to mix with other layers washed over them. You may have this pigment by another name: Winsor and Newton Winsor Violet, M. Graham Dioxazine Purple, or Holbein Permanent Violet. If you do not have carbazole violet or one of the others, you will need to purchase a tube for this project! Other violets will NOT work.
Watercolor brush, Round, Size 6 or 8 (https://amzn.to/39fMgu5)
Paper towels, tissues, and two water containers
Optional Supplies
Graphite transfer paper (https://amzn.to/2WCYVCq) – If you purchase transfer paper, make sure it is Wax Free)
Painter’s tape* for delicate surfaces (https://amzn.to/2OIjk4I) (also found in paint and hardware stores)
Blow Dryer (helpful for speeding up the drying time between layers)
Transfer Papers
All transfer papers are NOT created equally. I used both a white and a graphite transfer paper in the quilt project. You do not have to purchase either item to make the project work as I show you alternate ways to create a transfer. With that said, if you find yourself doing a lot of these, it’s worth the investment to get the transfer papers.
If you purchase graphite transfer paper please be sure it is Wax Free.
To transfer your project without graphite transfer paper, you can use a window or light box.
